Who we are

The Holocaust Art Recovery Initiative was founded to pursue one of the last major areas of unresolved Holocaust injustice: stolen art.

The Initiative began after Holocaust survivor and researcher Clara Garbon-Radnoti rediscovered over 180 reels of Hungarian Holocaust-era microfilm at the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. These reels included original 1944–1945 records from Hungarian government ministries, museums, banks, and looting offices.

Attorney Jonathan H. Schwartz partnered with Clara to translate and analyze the reels using a combination of AI-assisted review and painstaking human verification. The findings were stunning — clear evidence of state-organized looting, with documentation tying specific paintings, collectors, and museum officials to cultural theft.

This work laid the foundation for a broader international campaign — and for renewed legislative and legal advocacy.
